"The reason nothing was working was because I wasn't meeting her needs before asking anything of her."
The Local Pack started with Kuma β a dog who came close to being put to sleep after a life locked in a bathroom left her struggling to cope as a pet. Trying to help her sent me down a rabbit hole of training techniques, brilliant trainers, and ethical pack walkers and daycares.
What finally clicked wasn't a clever technique. It was realising I had to meet Kuma's breed needs first β before setting any expectations. That lesson is the heart of everything I do now: tailor the walk to the dog in front of me, then build from there.
I've always had a foot in the dog world β grooming, boarding, daycare, walking and endless fostering β following my step-dad, who kept our house full of rescues. After my daughter was born and I was juggling solo parenting with full-time work alongside assistance dogs, I couldn't find a local walker who got it. So I went back to what I love: being outside with high-energy dogs, figuring out what makes each one tick.
